Heat Pump Installation & Maintenance

A heat pump works on the basic principle that the sun's heat is always in the air, even in cold air. A heat pump extracts this heat from the outside air and transfers it into the interior of the house by way of the house's internal duct work. This heat is circulated through the ducts by a high-powered fan after it passes over a condensing coil to either add or remove heat from the air.

What heat pumps do

As their name implies, heat pumps pump heat. But it is where they get the heat that sets them apart on the home heating stage. During the winter months, heat pumps extract heat from the outdoor air and pump it directly into your home. While the air outside is obviously quite cold, it still contains a great deal of heat and heat pumps are designed to find and extract it.

Efficient & Economical

Heat pumps are economical because its operating costs to heat or cool are less than that of a traditional heater or air conditioner. A heat pump can produce three times as much heat or cooling for the same cost than an air conditioner with electric strip heat.

How heat pumps work

The heat produced is also less intense than a traditional heater, so it can run longer while still maintain a comfortable level of air flow and circulation. An added benefit is that heat pumps physically extract more moisture out of the air than a standard air-condensing unit. This means that humidity can be better controlled during the late summer months.

Heating your home is not the only thing that a heat pump can do. In fact, these excellent systems provide a year around home comfort solution because they are just as capable of cooling your home in the summer as they are at heating your home in the winter. To do this, heat pumps simply operate in reverse, extracting heat from your indoor air and pumping it outside.

Benefits of a heat pump

Along with providing a year-round solution to heating and cooling your home, heat pumps can provide many other benefits:

  • Affordable to install and maintain
  • Provides uniform heating and cooling
  • Costs less to operate compared to a traditional heater or air conditioner

Heat pumps provide a much more uniform heating and cooling experience than some other types of home comfort systems do. While a furnace maintains a certain indoor temperature by producing very hot air periodically and then allowing it to disperse throughout your home, a heat pump provides a steady stream of warmer air all day long. This helps to avoid the development of hot and cold spots throughout your home and it also tends to alleviate some of the “dry heat” problems associated with furnace heat in the winter.

With all of these benefits, it is easy to see why you might want to take a closer look at heat pumps as an option for your home’s new heating system.
